I have a new cat!

I've never had a cat, always dogs, guinea pigs, fish, or heck co-owning chickens. So this is a new experience for me. I like cats, I like pretty much every animal, but they scare me. It's silly I know, I play with pups by letting them gnaw on my arms and grabbing their jaws and just all kinds of rough housing. It used to kinda freak out my friends to see my big scary wolf-looking dog going to town on my arm(with practiced gentleness, it really looked way worse than it was, the most I ever got were a few red lines, no broken skin even) as I'm laughing. But dogs have blunt power that often bruises, I'm cool with bruises. Cats are like tiny concealed needles and razor blades. I feel like I'm hugging a blender or a garbage disposal that can turn on at any minute.

I am also well aware that my ease and fearlessness with dogs comes from a lifelong understanding. I grew up with my mom's german shepherds, my (who then became my brother's) australian shepherd, and my favorite, my groenendale, Saka, who just passed after tussling with cancer for a year. Saka was my best friend, raised her from a pup until the ripe age of 12 almost 13, but I digress.

So this cat is a totally new experience for me. I knew I wanted a shelter pet. I also didn't want the (repeated) hell of trying to find an new apartment when the time comes with a total of two dogs and one cat( I had the dog and my friend/roommate/sister has the other dog and cat). Finding an apartment that allows 3 pets is a headache sure but finding an apartment with 2 dogs and one cat is a nightmare. So cat it was.

After reading Fate Strange Fake I fell in love with Enkidu. I further loved the character after listening to the Epic of Gilgamesh via one of my fav podcasts, Myths & Legends. According to the legend Enkidu is a big strange hairy doll turned human. He's also like, the literary prototype of the friend archetype. He tells Gil when he's being an idiot, they bond through fighting and adventuring constantly, and when shit hits the fan En is there for his dumb arrogant friend.

So here I am, playing with Enkidu, my new, huge, hairy, gray, truck of a cat. Yes, he has as much in common with a truck with its brakes cut as he does with being a cat. Enkidu frequently builds up speed to the point that he skids and smashes into stuff ON OUR CARPET. What kind of cat skids on a carpet? I thought they were supposed to be precise and graceful! It's also not uncommon to see this giant gray furball go flying through the air and smashing into the table, the walls, or the pile of shoes by the door, from the other side of the couch as I'm lazily watching tv or playing Fate Grand Order.

Honestly, En's inability to act like a normal cat is on par with Enkidu of legend's inability to understand human customs, AKA being offered a drink, thanking the person, then grabbing a sheep, holding it above their head and guzzling milk from its teat.

I think the name is fitting. I can tell he's fast becoming the new friend I was hoping for.

tldr: I got a cat, his name is Enkidu, he is as much of a truck as a cat, and I love him~
